Which day of this loop is hardest in an RV?
Day 4, because the Inland Kaikōura Road is narrower and more winding than the coastal highway, with one-lane bridges and few services. It is sealed and well used by campervans and motorhomes, so take it steadily and fill the tank in Kaikōura first. The rest of the loop is on main highways.
How can you adjust this itinerary?
- Add a day in Kaikōura as a back-up for whale watching, since tours depend on sea conditions.
- Reverse it to finish in Akaroa, if you prefer to end with a relaxed harbour day.
- Swap Akaroa for the high country by heading west to Castle Hill instead of Banks Peninsula on Day 1.
Where should you stay?
Holiday parks in Akaroa, Kaikōura and Hanmer Springs make the loop easy, with power and facilities every night. Waipara has campgrounds of varying size. Self-contained freedom camping is limited across these areas and only for certified self-contained vehicles where councils allow it. See our Canterbury campsites guide.
