Why include Timaru on a Canterbury trip?

Because it adds a coastal, historic flavour to a region best known for its mountains. Timaru grew up as a port, and its grand old buildings, waterfront and beach have a seaside-town charm. The surrounding South Canterbury countryside is rich in history, from rock art left by early Māori in limestone shelters to colonial towns and heritage railways. And it sits on the way to the Mackenzie Country, so it is easy to fold into a longer trip.
